It has a small mouth for its size. This fish grows to 7-8 inch. , Gymno. Balzanii prefers water a little cooler than most other South American cichlids. Somewhere in the range 70-77°F (21-25°C) is best. This fish does not sift and forage through the substrate as much as Geophagus. The males have a brighter coloration and get a little larger than the female. These are captive bred and will accept a variety of foods
This fish will do well in some planted aquarium. It is not known to be a predator, but will eat small fish if the opportunity arises. We recommend keeping this fish in larger aquariums, 30 gallon and up. It does well with angelfish, plecos, catfish, larger tetras and some medium size peaceful cichlids.
