Duckweed, is a very small light green free-floating, seed bearing plant. Duckweed has 1 to 3 leaves 1/16 to 1/8 inch in length. A single root (or root-hair) protrudes from each floating plant. Duckweeds tend to grow in dense colonies in quiet water. Duckweeds can be an aggressive invaders of ponds. These plants should be controlled before they cover the entire surface of the pond.
In the aquarium, many fish eat duckweed, but most often it is used to create a suitable habitat for small fish and fry to hide in. Duckweed is well known to promoted micro invertebrates and small micro fauna growth, that small fish and shrimp will feed on.
