Riccia fluitans, or crystalwort, is a floating bladderwort which can be found all over the world, but only the Japanese variety is suitable for submersed growth. Riccia is a very easy plant to grow, because of its ability to tolerate a very wide range of environments, from medium soft to very hard water; pH ranges from 6.0-8.0 and temps from 15-30 degrees Celsius. As a floating plant, moderate lighting is sufficient for good growth and CO2 injection is not necessary.
It normally grows quickly at the surface when left floating. After some time it will form dense, bright green mats. Any single branch will reproduce into a large colony. This plant normally floats, but can also be attached to underwater objects such as driftwood and rocks. It can be attached with plastic mesh, plant glue or twine. This moss creates will create large amount of surface area and is good for shrimp and small fish to forage and hide.
